03.26.10 – Horse Feathers (PDX) + Eliza Rickman (LA) + Guests

After fronting several rock bands in his native Idaho, singer/songwriter Justin Ringle moved to Portland, OR in 2004 and began focusing on acoustic music, playing open mics regularly under the moniker Horse Feathers. In 2005, multi-instrumentalist Peter Broderick heard a couple of Justin’s demos and offered to help flesh them out. In February 2006 the duo went into Skyler Norwood’s Miracle Lake studios and recorded their debut album, ‘Words are Dead,’ which was released that September on Portland label, Lucky Madison. Later that year, Peter’s sister Heather Broderick joined the group on cello and by 2007, Horse Feathers began featuring a rotating cast of instrumentalists backing Justin’s guitar and vocals.

Justin and the Brodericks returned to Miracle Lake studios in the fall and winter of 2007 and recorded ‘House With No Home,’ which was released on Kill Rock Stars in the spring of 2008. Around that time, Peter left the country to pursue music in Europe, and Nathan Crockett was enlisted to cover violin duties. Several months later, Heather also left the group to pursue other musical projects and cellist Catherine Odell came on board. The current lineup was rounded out at the beginning of 2009 when Sam Cooper joined as a multi-instrumentalist. As a four piece, the group has been touring extensively and is currently recording a new album for release on Kill Rock Stars in March of 2010.

04.23.10 – Holly Golightly and The Brokeoffs (UK) + Nick Jaina (PDX) + Guests.

Holly Golightly and Lawyer Dave first met in the basement of a China Town smuggler’s den. Holly had need for an upright bass player to do a small U.S. tour and The Lawyer was the only one she could find. After a half hour run-through, they were off the next day. You might could say that this was the beginning of their collaboration as the idea of doing records together was first conceived on those long drives in the American West. After nearly ten years, seven-hundred-thousand miles, countless shows and other misadventures, the time finally came. In January of 2007 the two built a make-shift studio in the Southern English countryside to make the record they had talked so much about. With only 4 days to write, record and mix in, the pair couldn’t have neen be happier with the result. Supposed to be a low key release,”You Can’t Buy A Gun When You’re Crying” (Damaged Goods) quickly snowballed into a beautiful monster that scared up enough attention for the two to make an entire year’s touring out of it.

In 2008, Holly Golightly and The Brokeoffs have recorded a second offering, ‘Dirt Don’t Hurt’, released in October. This particular project was recorded in the middle of a 50 date tour during the only break they had. That week found them in Gijon, Spain on the Northern coast. They had chosen to record there at an analog studio by the name of Circo Perotti which is outfitted with a lovely selection of vintage microphones and loads of ancient outboard treasures to play with. After wrangling with all the ghosts, goblins and gremlins that inhabit gear and studios of this nature, the record was completed in five days… which is one more day than they spent the last one, so it may seem a little over produced to some!
